The Rams completed their pre-season list of friendlies with two home games of contrasting fortunes.

Saturday’s clash against former NPL opponents Ossett United proved to be a dour affair with both defences well on top. Indeed, there were very few chances for either side as the game ended score-less.

Tuesday’s match, however, produced a much more entertaining spectacle.

It took just six minutes for the opening goal to arrive, and a stunning strike from the left-hand edge of the penalty area from Harvey Whyte (above) smashed into the far top corner of the Vics net.

The home side continued to look dangerous, and it was no surprise when a right-wing cross was nodded home at the far post by Luke Sephton after 32 minutes.

The usual raft of half-time substitutions altered the dynamic of the match and on 58 minutes, a sloppy push in the box was spotted by the referee and the deficit was halved as the Vics tucked away the penalty.

Within five minutes the scores were level. Another sloppy piece of play gave the ball away and the advancing visiting forward gleefully hammered home the Vics equaliser.

That was to pose a test of character for the Rams, and it was a test they passed with flying colours.

Heads did not drop as they continued to play their expansive game and it was rewarded on 77 minutes when a tempting cross field ball in from the right was turned in at the far post by the on-rushing Harvey Hayhurst, to regain the Rams advantage.

That was the way the game stayed until the final whistle of a hugely enjoyable encounter which would have proved to be a useful run-out for both teams ahead of the new campaign.

That campaign begins on Saturday with an away trip to Pilkington, followed by a home match on Tuesday 30th against Abbey Hey.
