OTS – 9th DECEMBER
Once again, we take the chance to look back on events in our semi-professional history that took place on this equivalent Saturday … and it’s Saturday 9th December we look at today.
2017 – OSSETT ALBION v RAMSBOTTOM UNITED – Postponed
Evo-Stik Northern Premier League North Division
The Rams were without a game as the scheduled game with Ossett Albion fell foul to the weather that would hit December hard.
Maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing as the Rams had endured a ninth and tenth defeat of the season in the week, giving a spirited display in losing to league leaders South Shields 3-2 last Saturday before sinking to a disappointing 1-0 away loss to Droylsden on the Tuesday night, when Luke Daly scored deep in injury time to take the points – described as a ‘robbery’ in the match report.
Those results had seen the Rams slide to 15th place in the table, some six points away from the play-off places but manager Mark Fell was still confident as thought that his side “were going to give someone a hiding very soon.”
2006 – ST HELENS TOWN 1 RAMSBOTTOM UNITED 3
North West Counties League DIvision 1
(match report from Lancashire Telegraph archive)
Ramsbottom United marched into the top six of the North West Counties Football League First Division thanks to this convincing win over a lowly St Helens Town side.
Chris Steele scored the first goal when his shot somehow looped over Graham McCall and into the back of the net.
The second goal arrived just before half time when McManus found himself in space on the left side of the area.
His cross was misjudged by the keeper and ended up in the back of the net.
Lomax made it three with a free kick just after the interval when McCall misjudged his effort again.
It’s Saturday once again so its time to look back at what was going on with the Rams on this particular Saturday in our semi-professional history and today is Saturday 2nd December.
2000 – RAMSBOTTOM UNITED v GLOSSOP NORTH END – Postponed
North West Counties League DIvision 1
(match report from Lancashire Telegraph archive)
Heavy rain put paid to the scheduled game as the early morning pitch inspection saw the Riverside ground unfit, which was a shame as the Rams were targetting a fourth successive win in a row.
Seven goals in the week had given the side a huge boost, having downed Mossley 4-0 on the previous Saturday and followed it up with a comfortable 3-0 away success at Maine Road in midweek with Russell Brierley, Steve Orrell and Darren Bowman on target.
Chris Wilcock, Matt Holt and Wayne Briddon were all ready to return to the side although David Yorke-Robinson was a major doubt with a knee injury. As it turned out, it didn’t matter as the rain had the final say.
1995 – RAMSBOTTOM UNITED 1 MIDDLEWICH ATHLETIC 2
North West Counties League DIvision 2
(match report from Rossendale Free Press)
Mark Isherwood missed a penalty which denied Ramsbottom United a share of the spoils against Middlewich Athletic.
Athletic took the lead against the run of play through Palin and extended their lead in the 65th minute despite United having most of the territorial play.
Steve Johnson pulled a goal back after good work between Mark Keegan and Martin Hulme.
Isherwood struck a spot-kick wide of the target before skimming the bar with a fine effort and the visitors held out for the victory.
