This weekends game against Newcastle Town brought the final match of the season for both clubs and a final match in the division for at least a year for the hosts Ramsbottom United.

After a long and difficult season for Rammy it was fitting that they were able to bow out on a high thanks to goals from first half substitute Wealth Dasilva and front man Jordan Southworth.

The Rams started the game fast, with Ryan Lockett having a wonderful chance to catch Town goalkeeper Joseph Slinn off guard within the opening three minutes. Ramsbottom’s number one Tom Wooster found Lockett with a wonderful drop kick and as the tricky winger surged through the center of the park, he spotted the goalkeeper off his line and tried a cheeky chip attempt but he just couldn’t generate enough height and it was saved well in the end.

The home side had really started to play some nice stuff and on 16 minutes Jordan Scanlon and Ryan Lockett linked up excellently on the edge of the 18 yard box but Slinn made a wonderful save to deny the Rams winger for a second time.

Between the minutes of 19 and 22 the two liveliest players on the pitch, Scanlon and Lockett, were both forced off through injury, a bitter shame for them to end the season in this way.

However, on 39 minutes first half substitute Wealth Dasilva managed to win his side a penalty. The strong forward burst into the box and his cross, which was heading to the back post, was stopped in its tracks by a blatant hand ball. Dasilva was the man who stepped up to take it but his effort was saved, although, to the delight of the Rammy faithful, he was able to slot it home at the second time of asking.

The hosts went into the break deservedly a goal up and once the second half was back underway it didn’t take long for David Chadwick’s side to double their lead.

It was lovely footwork from Hasler-Cregg down the right touchline as he managed to slip Owen Collinge in behind who did wonderfully well to pull it back for Jordan Southworth to poke home at the second attempt on 56 minutes.

Less than 10 minutes later Newcastle managed to respond with a goal of their own when a corner was fizzed into the front post where second half substitute Maxwell Chimenes was able to head past Wooster to reduce the deficit back down to one.

That goal put a real urgency back into the game from both sets of players and the match started to become a real open end to end affair with both sets of players looking to be on their last legs.

On 84 minutes Rammy had a fantastic chance to wrap the game up when Henri Ogunby got free of his man and put a teasing ball across the face of goal which found Ryan Jennings at the back post. Unfortunately Jennings somehow couldn’t turn it goal bound as his effort sky rocketed over the bar.

The Rams did well to see the remainder of the game out as they secured a victory on the final day.

Everybody at the football club would like to say a huge thank you for your amazing support over the 2022/23 season and we hope to see you again when we start all over again in just a couple of short months.

We will be back stronger!
