Yorkshire born Tom Wooster has joined the Rams on loan for the remainder of the season from Premier League side Manchester United.
Tom joined United’s under 18s in 2021 from Barnsley FC. During the 2020/21 campaign Tom was named the academy player of the year at Barnsley his previous club and since joining United he has played semi regularly for the u18s. The young goalkeeper from Yorkshire has also represented England at youth level up to under 16s.
Tom signed his first professional contract for the Red Devils in April 2022 and made his professional debut for Ramsbottom last night against Workington in a game that he played a pivotal role. Tom saved a crucial penalty in the last minute of the game to earn his side a huge point on the road. It wasn’t just the penalty save from Tom that was impressive last night he also, made a number of huge saves throughout the game.
Manager Lee Doanfee told the club website that “Tom has settled in really well with the group in the two weeks that he’s been here”. Following the game last night Lee also said “making your debut away to Workington is always going to be a tough test, but I felt it was one that he came through with his head held high. Credit to him as his individual performance was very good and one that was matched by the rest of the lads”.
The club also spoke with Tom and he told us “ before joining Rammy I spoke with some of the coaches and the loan manager at United and we all decided that a loan was the best thing for my development. We sat down and looked at the options but it was Ramsbottom that really appealed to me”.
Upon joining the team Wooster expressed “I’m really pleased to be here. The manager, coaches and all the lads have made me feel really welcome. I’ve enjoyed training with everyone and I’m feeling sharp”.
After Tuesday’s heroics the clubs media team caught up with the young goalkeeper once more to ask him about his debut. “It was an amazing feeling. As a keeper a lot of work goes into that moment, all of your training and preparation come into play. Of course the coaches played a major role in that too and I’m really happy to repay the faith they have shown me straight away. Finally I just want to tank everyone for how welcoming and supportive they have been so far”.
