Here is our latest edition of Rammy On This Saturday as we look back at the events on the pitch on the respective Saturday’s in our non-league history.

SATURDAY 16th JANUARY 2016
NO FIXTURE

The Rams had no scheduled fixture for this Saturday in 2016 – which maybe wasn’t a bad thing!

Having produced two excellent wins at kick off the 2016 calendar year on lengthy away days to Stourbridge and Grantham Town, the hope of the big escape came crashing back down to earth when the Rams were mauled 6-0 at Ashton United on the Tuesday evening.

Four goals in the space of eleven second-half minutes lifted the home side from their 1-0 interval lead to 5-0 after 67 minutes only for a sixth to go past Grant Shenton late on.

That was our first defeat in the last four games …. it wouldn’t be our last!

SATURDAY 16th JANUARY 2010
SQUIRES GATE v RAMSBOTTOM UNITED

Our scheduled Unibond North West Counties League game away at Squires Gate was postponed as early as Friday due to a frozen pitch. It was the fifth weekend in a row that the Rams had been without a game but the big freeze that had blotted the early part of 2010 struck again.

There had been a little bit of hope that, with our opponents being so close to the coast, there might have been a possibility the game could have beaten the freeze – but it wasn’t to be.

Only one match survived the freeze that weekend and was the only match played in the whole of the North West Counties League for a month, dating back to 16th December 2009.

AFC Blackpool beat Irlam 1-0 … that’s the AFC Blackpool that play at Jepson Way … right next door to Squires Gate!!

SATURDAY 16th JANUARY 1999
RAMSBOTTOM UNITED 1 PRESCOT CABLES 2

In this real mixed bag of a season, the Rams suffered their third defeat in a row at the start of 1999, going down 4-2 away at Nantwich Town.

Goals from Mark Westhead and Dave Betts was not enough to prevent the Cheshire side from taking all three points – which would have been disappointing for Ken Bridge’s side as their hosts were firmly below them in the table.

A change in fortunes was certainly required.
