Let’s have another go!  Tuesday night under the HWRS lights for the first time in a month as we hope to welcome Stockport Georgians in the Macron League Cup Round 2 – weather permitting, of course, as the Ramsbottom area took quite a battering from Storm Bert over the weekend (pictured above).

OVERVIEW:
For those of a certain Rammy vintage, the name of Stockport Georgians will not be a unfamiliar one.  For they were a side we played for a few seasons in the Manchester League and now, here we are, playing each other again in a NWCFL competition – it’s nice to see you once again!

In the grand scheme of things, some might say that this game in not hugely important but it is to continue to winning mentality.  And whilst it is heavily favoured that the Rams will win this game against the side in 11th in Division One South, the Georgians come into this game off the back of a 1-0 win over Barnton some ten days ago – a much needed boost having lost their previous three games.  They were forced to sit on the sidelines as their home game with Abbey Hulton United fell foul to the weather.

They also have a player by the name of Lucas Berry in their ranks, one of the leading goal scorers in the NWCFL with 19 in the league and 23 in total, so certainly a dangerous player to watch out for so the Rams will certainly need to be on their guard.

As for the Rams, they come into the game off the back of an impressive 3-1 win away at West Didsbury and Chorlton which kept the Rams six points clear of the chasing pack at the top of NWCFL Premier Division.

Let’s see what happens in this game – the Georgians beat Cheadle Town away 2-1 to reach this stage while the Rams snuck past West Didsbury and Cholton via penalties and a place in round three is up for grabs.

HISTORY:
It was 1994/95 season in the Manchester League Premier Division that these two side last met – in two very entertaining games!  29 October 1994 at the Riverside was the home game that season for the Rams and we would win 5-1 but the reverse fixture, played at Flowery Field, would level the tallies 4-0 for the Georgians in May 1995.

The Rams finished 7th in that season while the Georgians were down in 12th but we were regular mid-table dwellers for the four seasons that we would meet, starting in 1991/92.  The Rams left for the NWCFL in 1995/96 but the Cheshire side waited a little longer, finally taking the leap in 2022, winning the Manchester League twice after the Rams departed in 2002 and 2015.

STEVE WILKES’ THOUGHTS:
“I thought we were excellent on Saturday from minute one and I couldn’t single out a single player as it was a brilliant team performance.  But we need to keep that up in all competitions as winning is a habit.

“We know that Stockport Georgians will want to come here and, as the league leaders of the league above, they will want to take a significant scalp in us, so we won’t take them lightly at all.”
